I was initially made aware of apprenticeships through a career advisor at Connexions, and straight away recognised what a great opportunity it would be. It offered me the chance to gain the skills needed to begin a business career and gain an NVQ qualification, all whilst earning a wage.
Once deciding to pursue the apprenticeship route, the next thing I had to do was decide on the type of apprenticeship. Following my research into the wide variety of services that Sutton Council offer, I truly appreciated what an interesting place to work it would be. I managed to secure a Level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship with the council’s insurance service. Because I had a job prior to becoming an apprentice, I found the transition straightforward as I already had the required work etiquette instilled in me.
When I first started my apprenticeship I was concerned that I may not be given enough opportunity to prove my talent, but this fear was soon disproved. I was lucky enough to have a very supportive line-manager, who also acted as my mentor and within six months of joining I had already proved myself as an important member of the team. Throughout the experience, my responsibilities and tasks both increased and I enjoyed the challenges they provided, as they enabled me to pick up knowledge and skills way beyond my years. I soon realised these assets were transferable to other roles too.
After almost two years in the insurance field, I decided this was certainly a career I wanted to pursue further. Since the completion of my apprenticeship, which rewarded me greatly, I have gone on to become the Technical Insurance Manager in the same department I started my apprenticeship in. I have also been given the opportunity to continue my studies, and now hold a Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership.
